5:02 am

here. we're talking about north 87. there's still a little bit of slowing there. still crews that have to clear from the area. but the off ramp itself is fully open, as has 87 been for the last half an hour through the area. there was major slowing there. that has cleared and it should be completely clear probably by the time you get there if you're leaving your house now, but now north 101, we're seeing more slowing around blossom hill this crash. i'm told no injuries and it's over on the shoulder, but i'll monitor that. that's early slowing for that southern part of san jose. meanwhile the rest of the bay shows a nice easy drive, but we're looking at the bay bridge it's clear. should be lighter volume on friday. but cynthia clearly we will have changes there at least as far as the volume goes. yeah and better clearing for our skies. enjoying that friday feeling. good morning everyone. we'll start with 54 in san jose. we've got some patchy clouds moving around the bay, especially up there in the north bay. parts of the tri valley. we'll do some cool four days up there in novato and 52 in the city. a bit warmer today to get that weekend going. 60s at the coast to some 80s inland. however, we are tracking some weekend changes making those

5:22 am

ahead, making our father's day weekend plans. i talked about this a few minutes ago. we're watching how this system in the pacific northwest will impact not only california, but also the pacific northwest. if you have any plans to travel into oregon and seattle next, the next couple of days, as far as our wind speeds go, it will be breezy as we get into our lunchtime plans and into our evening plans. we'll look at san francisco around 30 mile an hour. winds gusty out towards the marin coastline and our typical spots to watch the dry east bay hills. over the next couple of days, we fast forward this timestamp into saturday. still some really gusty winds. we go on into sunday, father's day. you might want to consider bringing some of those plans indoors and keeping an eye on some elevated fire danger through our hills, through our mountain passes, even fast forwarding this on into monday, those contours continue to be pretty elevated, so make sure you create that defensible space , making sure that the drivers around you are also taking those safety precautions and using the girls with dad on a paved

surface to avoid anything sparking up that could travel fast. san francisco over the next couple of days, we will keep it nice and mild. there breezy at times and into juneteenth. it looks like some fabulous weather on wednesday. now mike, you're tracking more crashes in san jose. a couple more on the chp grid here. we're looking at 85 southbound direction over on the shoulder here, as well as 87 completely unrelated to the other activity on 87. and that's also on the shoulder. so those no injuries reported for either of those crashes, but they did pop up visible on the grid. this was hidden by the 82 shield. we're going to talk about this on northbound 101. just until about two minutes ago. we had some slowing that shows up. even though the crash at blossom hill was on its shoulder. looks like the activity must have calmed down because it did clear from the area. did want to show you the approach to the bay bridge and the approach to the approach to the bay bridge. everything is moving very smoothly this friday. looking light back to you, the approach to the approach. all right. thank you mike. next on today in the bay.

extension and across the bridge over here from the parking lots over to oracle park. back to you. thanks a lot mike. well, stopping the flow of fentanyl from south of the border. coming up next on today in the bay, governor newsom's new plan to curb drug crimes and hopefully save more lives, more decisions and more controversy out of the supreme court. it's a very important day today. every winner needs an anthem. and this year we have a new remix for the olympics theme song ahead here, the new spin from one iconic band. keep it hereyou're.

in the upper 40s, with some patchy clouds moving about, but then we should mix out to plenty of sunshine this afternoon. a slightly warmer day in the mid to upper 80s there for the north bay. we'll track the rest of the bay area microclimate forecast for today, and the changes ahead for father's day weekend and we're looking at the drive in the east bay. this is fremont, 880 in fremont moves smoothly. those headlights south in through fremont heading down in toward milpitas coming into fremont on 680. just see another crash popping up on our grid. we'll check out the details. we'll show you what things are like. thanks. mike and cynthia. new this morning, governor newsom is announcing a big move when it comes to the california national guard. now, he is more than doubling the deployment at all entry ports as part of drug

5:45 am

task force operations. this to help combat the flow of fentanyl and other narcotics into the u.s. now, last fall, governor newsom first announced increasing national guard enforcement at four ports of entry along the u.s. mexico border. with father's day around the corner, dads who are also u.s. lawmakers want to shine a light on their role. they're organizing these second annual fathers week of action with new resolutions to support working families. southern california congressman jimmy gomez is the founder and chair of the congressional dads caucus. he is calling on lawmakers to build an economy with more focus on children. he introduced the father's day resolution, which asked for paid leave, affordable child care and enhanced child tax credit. we're trying to make sure that people understand that these policies are pro family, pro economy policies, the group says. millions of americans are forced to choose between their paychecks and taking care of

5:46 am

their children, they argue. legislation supporting working families will help boost the economy. president biden has signed a ten year promise to support ukraine, saying out loud the russians will not be able to wait us out. scott mcgrew joins us now. scott, the deal is pretty much symbolic. it's not a treaty of any kind, right? right. you would need approval from the us senate to confirm a treaty. so it really doesn't commit us to anything. but it does say to the russians, if your strategy is to wait us out, to wait for the united states to move on, it won't work. to be fair, we do have a habit of saying that and then moving on. see also. the kurds in iraq, among in laos, democratically elected government of afghanistan, just to name a few. biden says not this time. signing a deal with the ukrainian president at the g7 conference in italy. the group of seven countries also going to loan ukraine billions of dollars earned through interest paid on frozen russian assets. so not

5:47 am

the russians money, but the interest on that money. earlier this month, the us told the ukrainian military it could use certain american weapons to target troops and military equipment outside of the ukrainian border and into russia. now ukraine is always thought of crimea as being part of its territory, as it should, and it's been ramping up lately attacks on russian ships in the black sea as well, all the more reason to send your ships somewhere else. you may recall russian ships started showing up in havana harbor this week. not unusual. cuba and russia are allies tracked, of course, by the us navy. the russian flotilla has no air cover at sea. they only have one aircraft carrier, and it's broken. donald trump returned to the us capitol for the first time since the attack on the january 6th, 2021. he was surrounded by gop lawmakers. this is an outstanding group of people. i'm with them a thousand percent.

5:48 am

there was me 1,000. we agree just about on everything. and if there isn't, we work it out. and we've had a i've had a really great relationship with just about everybody here with everybody here and just about all of the senators. and if it wasn't fantastic, it gets worked out. those inside the meeting tell nbc news that trump suggested ending the federal income tax, replacing it with tariffs, money americans would pay for purchasing goods made outside the united states, a form of federal sales tax. those in the meeting also say trump made disparaging comments about milwaukee, which is the site of the republican national convention. the republicans lost wisconsin last time because of milwaukee, which is one of the reasons they're going to milwaukee. here's the mayor. i find it kind of perplexing. i find it kind of strange that he would insult the largest city in wisconsin because he's running for president. he obviously wants to win wisconsin. we'll win the election. and so, to

5:49 am

insult the state that's hosting your convention, i think is kind of kind of bizarre, actually. it's kind of unhinged in a way. the senate judiciary committee says there are more instances of clarence thomas accepting luxury trips from a billionaire friend, trips he is not documented on his financial disclosures. we expect more decisions from the high court to be published today. the first at 7 a.m. our time, including possibly president immunity, another abortion case, and whether domestic abusers should get their guns back. ginger, thanks a lot, scott. 548 for you on this friday morning. let's take a live look now in san jose. that's where politics will be front and center today. politics is back for its second year. the event focuses on silicon valley issues, including immigration, ai and economic development. former meet the press host and nbc news correspondent chuck todd is among this year's speakers. that event kicks off at 830 this morning at the hammer theater on san antonio road. tickets are available

5:50 am

through the theater's website at, well, new this morning a new airline catering demands. best friend is now bound for the bay area. bark air only launched its first coast to coast flight last month, servicing new york and southern california. the airline allows you and your furry friend to travel in style this october. it will expand to four additional locations, including san jose. they're also going to have routes to new york and chicago. so look at that. what a way to treat your pet. you know, now there's no word on airfare cost just yet, but tickets for bark air's initial flights, they came in around $6,000. round trip. so your man's best friend riding a little better than you? yeah. watch your paws. yeah, yeah, we're in cargo now. all right, well, trending this morning. the best of the best. getting ready to compete in the summer olympics in paris. you can see it all right here on nbc. but to help everyone get pumped up. well, the roots just recorded a reimagined version of

5:51 am

the iconic olympics theme song. let's take a listen. record breakers true greatness. rest takers, modern myth makers, the hard work eventually forms you into one of the strong few. the future belongs to. the moment you've been waiting for is finally upon you. it's time. show and prove. let them see what you going do. the sacrifice . rarely do they mention a price on the other side. rarely do they mention a fight. let every obstacle they ever set against you in life be the energy that takes you to olympian heights. it's time. what have you worked a life for? the song was premiered during the tonight show with jimmy fallon last night, and it is inspiring to say the least. that is something that i want to wake up to every morning, right. you have. you're going to have the chance very soon. lots of us olympic team trials are actually set to happen over the next couple of weeks. and starting saturday night, it gets underway here on nbc bay area. they're going to have the swimming trials in

5:52 am

indianapolis. you can keep up with all the trials right here and watch live on peaco*ck as well. and then try to emulate some of those strokes in the pool, i wonder, i would be curious to see how many sports injuries there are amongst us lay people. we see that we get inspired, like, i'm going to do that and then cramp up, and then the next morning you're on, you're at the gym and you're like, i can run. just like i can lift 50 pounds. welcome pain reliever. all right. okay. well it is a busy weekend for so many people. possibly celebrating dads. hint, hint advanced father's day. we're going to replay that at home again. our own olympian. well, will the weather be cooperating? cynthia i think as far as the sunshine goes, yes, but the winds could be a different story and we'll get to that in just a second. let's step out the door. it's sweater weather. petaluma 43 degrees. some partly cloudy skies there through 101. i also seeing that june gloom through

5:53 am

san francisco. our temperatures slightly cooler today. we're in the low 50s around the bay. as we talk about the temperatures expected for our friday. here we go. we're looking at a bit of a warmer day. 88, in santa rosa, fairfield a 87 in concord. we come down to the immediate bay. a nice day in san francisco, temperature wise, 68. we'll do 77 in fremont and 86 for you in morgan hill. not much of a change as we go on into our saturday temperatures. no major heat spike as we go on and take a look at these numbers. we're going to see temperatures staying really where they typically are for this time of year. but of course we are talking about the winds continuing to watch what's going on not only in our state, but right next door. if you have any plans to head to tahoe or to reno, we notice this contour here. some really gusty winds for them. they've actually they've actually got a red flag warning that goes into effect later tonight. so watch for that as for us, we are tracking some gusty winds that really start to pick up tomorrow afternoon, especially near our coastline

5:54 am

and our mountain passes. so just be careful on the roadways as you head to visit dad this weekend. we go on into sunday watching those really gusty winds coming onshore right now as is, but sometimes they could shift offshore and that's what we'll be watching. of course, with the increase in fire danger, i'm going to push this timeline for you here on into monday morning. still continuing to see some really breezy winds. so just check back in here over the weekend. i'll keep you updated with that. i mentioned a couple minutes ago that we're going to transition into la nina. you're going to start to hear that a bit more often. and here's what you need to know as we transition into the later summer months. really with la nina, we move those cooler waters along the equatorial pacific here closer to our borders here along mexico, peru. and what does that mean as far as the weather? i'm going to tell you that not every la nina or el nino is the same. but typically what we see is a wetter pacific northwest and into parts of the north bay, down into socal and into the desert southwest. it trends

5:55 am

warmer and drier. so we'll see those changes as we go on deeper into the season and what it can bring about. let's take it to that 7-day forecast. of course, what we need to know over the next couple of days, immediate future 80 will carry us through the next couple of days. we'll watch for those wind speeds and lots of sunshine around the bay area san francisco. get ready for the wind the next couple of days. temperatures shouldn't deviate too much from those upper 60s. mike you're tracking something in fremont. what's going on? i am, i'm chatting. thank you for that explanation on la nina. i love that when you geek out over their science, why are you looking over in the south bay? this is typical tracking south bay slowing, but it is indeed fremont coming into fremont, where there's a new crash. i'm tracking south 680 out of sunol right around vargas there is a crash reported. we've seen no slowing over the last few minutes. hopefully everything is off to the shoulder quickly, but i'll continue to track that it's in your commute direction. you see that little build off of 84 and coming off the dublin interchange as well. meanwhile there is a crash over here near appian way west 80. the upper

5:56 am

east shore freeway. no slowing shows up, but there may be one lane blocked that might indicate how light the traffic volume is. a little slowing for highway 37. highway four just fine. the bay bridge does show a little slowing on the incline. the metering lights are active. according to the chp report. the live look shows you no backup, though, so the backup or whatever slowing there is, is after the toll plaza as those lanes narrow. look at all these lanes here for those unfamiliar, we do lose about half of those lanes as we get on to the bay bridge. that's why there's all that slowing on the incline, even without metering lights. back to you. thanks a lot, mike. happening now san francisco continues its juneteenth events following the parade last weekend. at noon today, leaders will hold a kickoff celebration outside city hall on the polk street side in carlton be goodlett place. more celebrations are planned for the weekend, including an event on treasure island, another in the fillmore, and a third event on sunday in the bay view. the official juneteenth holiday is next wednesday. a big heads up for people with weekend plans in the south bay straight ahead, a
